Kenneth F. Stein Jr, or Kenny II as everyone knew him, spent his lifetime at Sayville Ferry Service. In fact, his first steps taken as a baby were aboard his family's ferry.
Along with his love for Sayville Ferry Service, Kenny's tremendous heart reached out to those in need. In the early 1980's, in his search to learn more about learning disabilities, Kenny joined the Suffolk Orton Society. He became heavily involved and helped build and promote this young group into a strong and honorable organization.
Now called The Long Island Branch of the International Dyslexia Association; scientific and educational practices are used to increase public awareness of dyslexia. They continue to serve individuals with dyslexia, their families, and professionals in the field for almost 30 years. It is a strong resource and support system for parents, dyslexics and educators.
As a loyal and committed member of the Sayville Kiwanis, Kenny would also help to establish and organize the annual outing to Fire Island for disadvantaged children. Each year he donated his boat and crew to a group of children with special needs, who would otherwise never have the opportunity to enjoy a picnic on Fire Island or sneak a glimpse of the ocean.
More than his willingness to help anyone in need, Kenny II was revered as one of Sayville's most respected and cherished citizens. He was a quiet and unassuming man who always contributed to the community that he believed so much in.
His memory and generous spirit lives on through this scholarship fund which acknowledges two students each year and recognizes their hard work and dedication to overcome their learning disadvantages, just as Kenny had to overcome in his own life.
